Ink jet thrift using Canon and refills

At the Haws home we have been saving money and preserving family peace by using inexpensive black ink jet refills by the pint (500 ml) and color refills by the 1/4 cup (60 ml) for years. The kids get to print all the colored projects they want, which is very nice. And dad just tops the four ink tanks off with a squirt from a syringe every once in a while.

We were lucky when we started that we owned a Canon printer. Inkjet Southwest (now Cartridgetech, which does not sell ink), our sole supplier, explained to us that Canon is the best make for refills, because they do not "play games" to make their cartridges non-refillable. We had a Canon BJC-4100, and now we have a Canon PIXMA iP4000. We plan to stick with Canon as long as it works for us because of the money and stress refilling has saved us.

As for a supplier now that Inkjet SW has sold out, I will rely on Google or http://www.re-inks.com. By the way, they also put in a good word for Canon.

Happy printing.

Follow-up March 21, 2009: Repeat-O-Type is the venerable ink maker. inksite.com sells their inks.
